Months of celebrations and holiday parties are almost over! But did your eating habits get out of control? Perhaps you found yourself having a few more ‘cheat’ days than you planned. Or maybe your cheat day turned into a cheat month! Whatever happened, learn how to get back to healthy eating after the holidays with these tips!
Put the Past Behind You
What’s done is done! There’s nothing you can do to change what happened these last few months. No way to go back in time, no penance you can pay, no punishment you can subject yourself to, that will make your slip-up disappear. It sounds obvious, but sometimes our brains seem to forget that the past really is in the past, and thinking about it often won’t make it go away. For that reason, there’s no need to dwell on your mistakes – it won’t help you move forward.
Let Go of Guilt
Similarly, don’t let guilt in! Feeling bad for not eating healthy during the holidays won’t make it any easier to start your healthy eating after the holidays. The guilt, regret, and shame you feel – put it all away. Understand that guilt is not a good motivator! Because if you want to get back to healthy eating after the holidays, you need to start fresh!
Don’t Blame Anyone
Perhaps you’ve been blaming yourself for indulging in those holiday meals. Or maybe you’re blaming your family for bring three different kinds of pie (all your favorites)! Maybe you’re blaming your spouse or kids for pressuring you to enjoy yourself. Well, here’s what I have to say to that: There is no one to blame! And, shocker, enjoying holiday meals is not a sin. , So, enjoy your life! Because there are only so many holiday celebrations you get to enjoy, and even fewer with your parents and children. Put your goals aside for a few days to have fun celebrations with your family.
Now, if you found yourself going off the rails for weeks or months at a time, my message is the same: be gentle with yourself! Blaming, guilting, shaming, and convincing yourself that you need to pay for your sins will not work! Choose to leave the past in the past and move forward.
Don’t Finish Leftovers (If You Don’t Want To)
I’ll bet your fridge is full of leftovers right after the holidays! Now, not everyone is a leftovers lover. Or maybe they’re making you feel bad and reminding you of how off track you got. But I’m officially giving you permission: You don’t have to eat them if you don’t want to! No one is making you eat dry microwaved turkey, stale stuffing, and all that pie. Put the guilt and self-punishment aside, and eat food you’ll actually enjoy, that will make you feel good about yourself and your body.
Find Your Plan
What is your plan for healthy eating after the holidays? Remember to make it reasonable! Again, you can’t starve yourself and expect to make real progress. That weight will come right back on, and your metabolism will be slower to boot! Instead, focus on making small, healthy changes. For instance, add fruits and vegetables into your diet. Or find a way to move your body that you love and will do consistently. Spend more time with people you love who will help you establish healthy habits. Do something every day that helps you build a good relationship with yourself and your body!
