Caring for Your Mental Health when Your Physical Health is Bad

When your physical health isn’t great, your mental health can suffer, too. I know this personally, as I’ve struggled with IBS and migraines for the last few years. It’s difficult to keep yourself from falling into anxiety about your health. Or worse, depression about your current situation – I’ve experienced both! So how do you take care of your mental health when your physical health is bad? Read the tips I’ve learned from my own struggles.
Prioritize True Rest
If your physical health isn’t good, you need to let your body heal. That means avoiding stress, negativity, and any physical movements that might make things worse. When I have a migraine, I need a dark, quiet room. No playing on my phone, or watching TV in the background, or sneaking in a little writing! I know these things will make my migraine more severe and last longer.

Let Go of Guilt
Feeling like you need to get something done – I get it! I’m a busy mom and business owner. If I stop, my business and family stop too. But to really heal, I know I need that true rest, and I can’t really rest if I’m busy feeling guilty about resting! Give yourself full permission to let go of guilt, so you can take care of your mental health when your physical health is bad.
Connect with Others
Don’t let yourself get isolated while you’re sick! Stay in touch with friends, spend time with family… You can probably find groups on Facebook or Twitter full of people going through the same thing you are. Stay connected to other people to take care of your mental health when your physical health is bad – having close support is essential to not slipping into negativity!
Whatever makes you laugh, chase after it! One of my favorite ways to take care of your mental health when your physical health is bad is to watch funny animal videos on YouTube. There are thousands and they make me smile! Maybe you love watching stand-up comedy, or FaceTiming with your niece. Whatever it is, get more of it in your life!
Choose a Hobby
Of course, my blog is where most of my extra time goes. But I also like to play guitar, paint, and play with my daughter. What are the hobbies you like most? If you can, do more of them. If you can’t do what you’re used to, try something new! Maybe you can get some yarn and a hook delivered with Amazon Prime to try crochet. This might be difficult for your issue, but getting outside is so important to take care of your mental health when your physical health is bad. Getting out of the house when you’ve been stuck inside for days or weeks will do wonders for your mind. And smelling the fresh outdoor air with a breeze will wake up those lungs! Go sit out on the porch, or even just open up a window and sit near it – just get a breath of fresh air!
