It’s hard to stay motivated when you haven’t succeeded yet. Moving forward in the face of uncertainty is difficult, especially when the uncertainty is about yourself. Learn how to push through self-doubt and stay motivated, even when you haven’t succeeded yet.
Remember Your Reasons
What caused you to start working toward your goal in the first place? When you started, you believed you could do it – otherwise you wouldn’t have had the motivation to start. Write down a list of every single reason you want to achieve your goal. How would your life change? How would you feel about yourself? What do you have to gain? Write it all down and hang this list up somewhere you can see it. Remember your whys whenever you start to feel that doubt creep in.
What Makes You Special?
What makes you able to achieve this goal? Now’s the time to cut through all the modesty and humility that society tells us women need to hide behind. What makes you a badass who can do this with her eyes closed? Why do you believe in yourself? Write it down (and don’t be afraid to complement yourself like you would to someone you look up to). Reread how invincible and well-equipped you are if you ever dare to question yourself.
Get Validation from the Right People
Be careful with this one! Going out looking for validation can definitely backfire. But if you have a supportive friend or family member who believes in you, talk to them often! Other people can see our good traits better than we can. Find someone who will remind you why you’re going to succeed and how great you’ve done so far. But don’t go looking for just anyone! Sharing your business with the wrong person can hurt you, whether they don’t believe in you or talk behind you back. You’ll prove them wrong in the end, though, with the help of someone who loves and supports you.
Read Success Stories
Search out other people who have succeeded! Read the stories of how they did it. You might even find some hints that will help you on your journey. There’s one caveat though: remember that no two people will have the same path. Maybe there’s someone who reached their goal in half the time you’ve already spent on it. Maybe they had some privilege that made their path straighter. But keep your mind in the right place and be inspired by their stories, not jealous. You’re forging your own path, not following someone else’s.
Everyone Started Somewhere!
Everyone who has succeeded started where you are: struggling to figure things out themselves, fight through self-doubt and the doubt of others. But some of them made it through – because they stayed motivated and didn’t give up! You’ll be one of them if you remember that feeling of confidence and excitement you had when you first set out on your goal. Remember your reasons, your traits, your real friends, and your idols.
