With the new year just around the corner, you’re probably thinking about your goals and intentions for next year. But have you chosen a word of the year? A word of the year can help you work towards your goals and improve yourself, without the looming fear of failure! So, keep reading to find out whether a word of the year is right for you, and how to choose one.
What Is a Word of the Year?
A word of the year is a word or short phrase you focus on for the year. As a result, most people choose something that want to improve on in many areas of their lives. But it’s not your typical New Year’s resolution! Unlike a resolution, you can’t fail at having a word of the year – because you’re not setting limits on yourself, or trying to reach impossible goals. Your word is the intention you want to set for all aspects of your life.
What’s a Good Word of the Year?
A good word isn’t too narrow. So choosing something that only applies to one part of your life, or is more of a resolution in disguise, wouldn’t be a great choice. For example, ‘thin’ is not a beneficial word of the year. Because it only applies to one aspect of your life (body shape), and you will probably feel guilty if you don’t attain it.
You’ll know your word is good if you can apply it to most or all areas of your life. Here are some examples of great words:
DETOX – SIMPLIFY – FOUNDATION – PEACE – JOY – POSITIVE – INSPIRE – BALANCE – PURPOSE
You can choose to detox your life this year by getting rid of negativity at work and home. You could set strong foundations for your future with your health and career choices. Or you could strive for a healthy balance between every aspect of your life.
These words are perfect for setting your intentions for big, positive changes for the year.
Is a Word of the Year Right for Me?
Are you tired of setting New Year’s resolutions? Do you find yourself paralyzed due to the thought of a new year? Or perhaps you’ve tried to overhaul your life, only to give up by the second week of January?
Most people have given up on their resolutions by February. Why? Because they’re not setting the right kind of goals. (Read more about setting the right goals here!)
A word of the year is perfect for you if you’re tired of setting goals but failing to achieve them. If you still want to make big changes, setting a word of the year is a way to do it, without beating yourself up for failing!
How Do I Start?
Choosing your word isn’t as hard as it seems. There’s probably a word that’s been coming up in your life over and over this year. And there’s a good chance you’ve been noticing it because that’s what you need in your life! Take a look through the list of words above and see if any of them stand out to you. You’ll probably find one of them is calling to you!
Now, you have two choices. You can go into next year focusing on your word, and your life will improve because of it! Or, even better, you can supercharge your progress by journaling through your beliefs and intentions with my new Word of the Year Workbooks!
